Corrie Film Club: Day in the Dark | Saturday 25th January 2025
This year’s free mini film festival from Corrie Film Club celebrates the work of iconic British film makers Powell and Pressburger and that of Martin Scorsese who was greatly influenced by their films.
We will begin the day in Corrie and Sannox Village Hall at 11am with coffee and the fascinating documentary Made in England in which Martin Scorsese explains with amazing insight the effect that Powell and Pressburger had on his own work. Not to be missed – and if you catch this it will really illuminate the rest of the day.
We will break at 1pm for lunch (soup and bread and cheese provided) and then continue at 2pm with our first Powell and Pressburger – The Small Back Room. Made in 1949 but restored by BFI in 2024, this film is the story of a troubled love affair between a tormented back – room scientist and a secretary told against a background of ministerial intrigue and empire building. Good stuff!
Tea and cake follows at approximately 4pm with Black Narcissus - being shown at 4.15pm. Black Narcissus, made in 1947 and based on the novel by Rumer Godden, is classic and award winning P and P starring Deborah Kerr, Flora Robson, Jean Simmons and Esmond Knight. Set during the final years of British colonial rule in India, it focusses on the tensions within a small convent of Anglican sisters who are trying to establish a school in a former harem of an Indian Raja on an isolated mountain in the Himalayas. Intrigued?
Supper follows at 6pm (veg and meat chilli and bake potatoes provided) and then at 6.45 we will watch Scorsese’s last film – Killers of the Flower Moon. Set in 1920s Oklahoma and based on true events this impressive film focusses on the murder of members of the Osage Nation after oil was discovered on tribal lands. The tribal members had retained mineral rights on their reservation but a corrupt local politician and businessman seeks to steal the wealth. With stunning performances from Leonardo Di Caprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone this is a film worth watching.
All are welcome and you are welcome to dip in and out to whatever aspects of the day interest you.
There is no charge but a small donation to Corrie and Sannox from non-film club members is always appreciated.
